Patrick Mahomes reacts to Luka Doncic trade: 'As a Dallas fan, it hurts me'
Patrick Mahomes is quite invested in Kansas City sports but one team from his Dallas roots remains a part of his fandom — the Dallas Mavericks. He was just like the rest of us Saturday night, finding out Luka Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on social media. Mahomes tweeted “Wait what?” before speaking for all Mavs fans by saying “I’m sick (right now).”
Super Bowl Opening Night saw Mahomes at the podium and provided the Chiefs quarterback an opportunity to speak further on his trades. He admitted to being hurt by the decision but is not only happy for the incoming Mavs pieces but the chance Doncic has with the Lakers.
“As a Dallas fan, it hurts me,” Mahomes said. “But I’m happy for him that he’s going to be able to go out there and be in LA and get to try to achieve his goal of winning a championship. He means so much, not just for the basketball team, but also the city of Dallas. I’ll always be appreciative of those years. But I’m excited for the Mavericks moving forward and the guys that they brought in.”
During the offseason, Mahomes would find himself sitting courtside at the American Airlines Center on occasion. Trips were taken there during Dallas’ run to the NBA Finals last year, watching games against Oklahoma City and Minnesota. Mahomes was born in Tyler, TX before attending Whitehouse High School just about 115 miles East of Dallas.
Obviously, the Chiefs are his top priority as Mahomes is looking to win a third consecutive Super Bowl on Sunday against Philadelphia. Baseball allegiance goes to the Royals as Mahomes owns a small portion of the team. But basketball has let him stay true to his Texas roots.

Even on Monday, many in Dallas are still hurting over the trade and Mahomes is no different. There appears to be personal optimism for what the Mavericks can be in the future, adding Anthony Davis and Max Christie for this year’s run.
Three Mavs games are scheduled before Mahomes takes the field for the Super Bowl. Tuesday night against Philadelphia is first up but Davis has already been ruled out due to an injury. Fans will have to wait at least until Thursday vs. Boston before their new star takes the court.
Taking care of business against Philadelphia is at the top of the quarterback’s mind but in the offseason, supporting the Mavs will continue despite the pain of the Doncic trade.
