Patrick Mahomes reveals how he got out of the 'friend zone' with wife Brittany

If you’ve caught any of Quarterback, you’ve probably learned a lot about Patrick Mahomes. The Netflix docuseries shows the on-field action. But it also puts a spotlight on the personal lives.

And in one episode, the Mahomes let the audience know as to how they became the long-time lovebirds. It wasn’t all glamour with them like you saw at the Met Gala in NYC or Wednesday’s ESPYS in LA.

Back in Whitehouse, which is deep East Texas, Brittany and Patrick started out as just friends. Of course, that was in middle school when Patrick was a seventh grader and crushing on older woman, Brittany. She was in the eighth.

“I was like the best friend, in the friend zone forever,” Patrick Mahomes said in the first episode of Quarterback. “I used to walk her to class and was trying to flirt. When I was a sophomore in high school, and she was a junior, I actually got her a rose and I was kinda, like, I had a crush on her. But I was giving the rose as a joke, but kind of a quotation ‘joke.’”

According to Brittany, she let Patrick out of the friend zone at lunch time in the cafeteria. By then, both were in high school. The rose he brought to the cafeteria made her see her future husband and father of her children in a different light. Cue some sparkly red hearts.

“I thought it was the cutest thing in the world,” she said. “And then everyone at our lunch table started chanting, ‘Kiss him, kiss him!’ and made it really awkward ‘cause we were ‘just friends.’ That’s kind of what started it and I thought it was cute.… “

Let’s give a collective awwww as we imagine young Patrick Mahomes all socially awkward as he pondered whether the girl of his dreams really liked him, liked him. It could be a scene out of any John Hughes movie in the 1980s.

“So they were chanting and I thought it was kind of awkward,” Brittany Mahomes says of Patrick. “And it was funny and then we just kind of… I was like, ‘OK, this guy is actually kind of cute. Maybe I do like him.’ So then we just started talking and then started dating.”

Patrick Mahomes, with Brittany by his side, spent the earlier part of the week in Los Angeles. They’ve turned into an NFL super couple. First there was the premiere of Quarterback. Then on Wednesday, the Mahomes sat in the front row for the ESPYS. Patrick Mahomes won male athlete of the year and the Chiefs picked up the trophy for top team. It’s definitely been a good offseason for the KC quarterback.

But all the off-season fun comes to an end next week when Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs report to training camp. First practice officially starts the team’s Super Bowl defense.
