Patrick Mahomes Sr. formally charged with felony DWI following February arrest

The father of Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes was formally indicted on a charge of felony DWI in Texas on Wednesday, according to Smith County Court records. The charge stems from his arrest on Feb. 3, just days before he watched his son win Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. Police pulled Patrick Mahomes Sr. over while driving. They arrested him after he showed signs of intoxication. He also had an open, 16 oz. Coors beverage in his center console.

According to the arresting officer, the former MLB pitcher admitted to having consumed beer at a bar prior to operating the vehicle. The maximum prison sentence for a third or more offense DWI felony is 10 years in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice penitentiary.

Mahomes Sr. facing 10 years following arrest in Texas 

Police arrested and booked Mahomes on a Saturday around 8:30 p.m. in Tyler, Texas, for driving while intoxicated third or more. The Chiefs star’s father has been arrested six times for DWI, including twice in 2012, twice in 2018 and once in 2019. He previously served 40 days in county jail for one of his arrests. He also received a charge of public intoxication in 2016 during a game between TCU and Texas Tech.

Mahomes was still able to travel out of the state of Texas for his son’s Super Bowl victory after the arrest. According to the conditions of his bail, which he posted on the Sunday morning following his arrest for $10,000, he could travel, but he could not drink or partake in illegal drugs. He also had to appear at the Smith County probation office on the Monday morning following the Super Bowl to meet with an officer and receive further instructions.

The Chiefs quarterback briefly spoke to reporters about his father’s arrest in the days leading up to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas.

“He’s doing good,” Patrick said on Feb. 5. “I don’t really want to get into it too much, but he’s doing good for whatever the situation is.”

“It’s a family matter,” he added. “I’ll just keep it to the family, and that’s all I really have to say at this point.”

Chiefs star Rashee Rice facing inquiry after Dallas wreck

The attorney of Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice issued a statement Monday, saying Rice is “cooperating with local authorities” after he was allegedly connected to a vehicle involved in a major crash in Dallas on Saturday evening.

“On behalf of Rashee Rice, his thoughts are with everyone impacted by the automobile accident on Saturday,” said Rice’s attorney, Royce West, via Adam Schefter of ESPN. “Rashee is cooperating with local authorities and will take all necessary steps to address this situation responsibly. Any and all requests for comment can be directed to his attorney Mr. Royce West of West & Associates, LLP.”

The Dallas Morning News initially reported that the accident occurred around 6:20 p.m. and that police are now looking for him.

“Police are looking for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice in connection with a major accident Saturday evening in northeast Dallas, law enforcement officials confirmed to The Dallas Morning News,” the outlet reported. “A vehicle believed to be registered or leased to Rice was involved in a crash on North Central Expressway at about 6:20 p.m., officials told The News.

“The law enforcement officials said that police are looking for Rice, and a police call sheet obtained by The News confirmed that law enforcement officials were searching for him in connection with the accident.”
