In 2019, Patrick Mahomes and Gehrig Dieter won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs. But Wednesday night, they were rivals as Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs took on Dieter’s New York Yankees in the ALDS.

The Yankees held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. That’s when the Royals’ bats woke up – and Mahomes made sure to let Dieter know.

An RBI double from Kyle Isbel and a run-scoring triple from Michael Massey tied things up at 2-2 during Wednesday’s third game of the Best-of-5 series. Mahomes – who has a 1% stake in the Royals – immediately found Dieter after Massey drove in the tying run, chirping him about the Yankees’ lead disappearing so quickly.

The Yankees and Royals entered Wednesday night tied 1-1 in their series. New York took the first game 6-5 on Saturday before Kansas City bounced back to win Game 2, 4-2. That meant it was all even as the series headed to Kauffman Stadium.

It’s safe to say Dieter was ready for the series to move to Kansas City. He expressed his excitement on social media and said he wanted to see plenty of Yankees fans in attendance.

“Going to be thick into enemy territory tonight,” Dieter wrote. “Can’t wait to see all the Yankees fans at the K tonight!!”

Gehrig Dieter was teammates with Patrick Mahomes from 2017-21 after signing with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Alabama the same year Mahomes went No. 10 overall in the NFL Draft. He only totaled two receptions during his career and announced his retirement in June 2022.

That Super Bowl proved to be the first of three for Mahomes and the Chiefs. They’re coming off back-to-back titles and haven’t missed a beat in 2023, taking a 5-0 record into the bye week this week. Kansas City is one of two undefeated teams remaining in the NFL, along with the Minnesota Vikings, and will come out of the bye with a matchup against the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 20.
