Patrick Mahomes showed off his amazing ability to improvise in Saturday’s preseason game vs. the Lions, when he decided to throw a behind-the-back pass to tight end Travis Kelce. The funny thing is, Mahomes shared in an interview with Trent Green that he actually threw the pass because he was ticked at Kelce for running the wrong route.

Here’s a brief clip of the interview below.

Patrick Mahomes explained what happened

Mahomes spoke at length with Trent Green and answered a number of questions on Saturday. First, he let everyone know how the play unfolded.

“Yeah, long story short. Travis didn’t run the route he was supposed to run. And then it was kind of a behind-the-back pass because I was mad. I was pissed off at Travis. He was supposed to run a flat route. I don’t think you could hear me on the broadcast. I’m yelling at him and then he doesn’t run it, so, out of spite, I threw a behind-the-back pass. But now, it’s gonna be a highlight,” Mahomes explained.

He said the play needs to be improvised.

“100 percent. That’s what I’ve been trying to say to everybody. It can’t be planned. It’s gotta be just naturally happen, kind of in the groove of things. I actually forgot about it until halftime, someone actually brought it up to me. It wasn’t like I planned that at all or it wasn’t a called play. It just kind of happened,” he continued.

“100 percent. We had some RPO type thing going and he was the guy I’m supposed to throw it to and then I got stuck with the football in my hand. I was like, ‘Gosh darnit, Travis’ and then I threw it behind my back and it worked out for us,” Mahomes explained.

What are his thoughts on the Chiefs roster and going for the three-peat in the 2024-2025 campaign?

“I think it’s just steady progression. We’re not ready yet. We’re still building in the preseason. Obviously, I think we’re playing a little bit better this week than we did the week before and that’s what you want. You want to just keep getting better and better. We’ll have a few more weeks of training camp back at home in Kansas City. And we have one more preseason game. And you just want to keep building until you get to that first game against a great opponent, and then you want to keep that momentum going throughout the whole season,” the three-time Super Bowl champion continued.

“It’s a long season. You know that better than anybody. We can’t focus on that right now, but we can work on getting better everyday,” Mahomes finished.

Next up for Kansas City, they’ll take on the Chicago Bears on Thursday, August 22nd.
