Patrick Mahomes wears Texas Longhorn mascot head after losing March Madness bet to Shane Buechele
Patrick Mahomes became a Texas Longhorns fan for a split second by becoming the school’s mascot. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback went to his Instagram Story (per PEOPLE) on Friday to post himself wearing the Texas Longhorn mascot head after losing a March Madness bet to quarterback Shane Beuchele, a former teammate of Mahomes.
“A bets a bet… okay cool,” Mahomes wrote in the caption. Mahomes played college football at Texas Tech, and the basketball team lost to NC State 80-67 in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Buechele played college football at Texas, and the basketball team earned a 56-44 victory over Colorado State in the first round. However, the Longhorns lost to Tennessee 62-58 in the second round over the weekend.
Buechele signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2021 and was a backup QB for Mahomes for two seasons. He was a member of the Chiefs when they beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII during the 2022 season. The Chiefs waived Buechele in August 2023, then signed with the Buffalo Bills, where he spent the entire season.
In college, Buechele spent three seasons in Texas before transferring to SMU. In his final seasons with the Mustangs (2020), Buechele threw for 3,095 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions with a 65.4 completion percentage.
Patrick Mahomes’ History at Texas Tech
Mahomes played for the Red Raiders for three seasons (2014-2016) and was a prolific passer. In 2015, the three-time Super Bowl champion threw for 4,653 yards and 36 touchdowns. He followed that up with 5,052 yards and 41 touchdowns in 2016. Mahomes’ production in 2016 led to him being named to the All-Big 12 Second Team and winning the Sammy Baugh Trophy.

Following his college career, Mahomes was selected by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He has become one of the best players in NFL history, but Paul Finebaum is not ready to crown Mahomes as the GOAT.
“The only thing that I would say is let’s slow down on crowning Patrick Mahomes the greatest quarterback of all time,” he said on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning, back in February. He’s still four behind Tom Brady.”
Finebaum added: “But what he’s done in a really short, finite period of time is probably the greatest accomplishment of any quarterback ever. It’s always a tricky question. I’m guilty of having proclaimed one man the greatest college coach of all time, then I had to come back and proclaim another guy. So, you do this at your own risk, but just the fact that it’s a conversation just shows how great he is.”
