The No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft will not start this weekend for the Carolina Panthers. With new head coach Dave Canales making the decision to bench quarterback Bryce Young in favor of veteran Andy Dalton following just two games of the 2024 season.

Young’s benching has come with a lot of opinions regarding the signal caller and the Carolina franchise as a whole. And after closely covering the Young during his college career at Alabama, college football analyst Paul Finebaum weighed in on the decision.

“There’s no way to sugarcoat, his performance has been miserable,” Finebaum said Wednesday on ESPN’s Get Up. “But I blame the management of that franchise. Greeny, I always thought Daniel Snyder was the worst owner in modern NFL history. Well, he’s being rivaled by David Tepper.”

“He has been a complete and total bust in Carolina. I live down there, so I’ve watched it up close. Bryce has not been given a fair chance.”

The Panthers made a blockbuster trade on Tepper’s watch in order to acquire Young, trading four draft picks and wide receiver D.J. Moore to the Chicago Bears in exchange for the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. A pick they would have earned in the 2024 Draft following a league-worst 2-15 record last season but traded away to Chicago.

Young threw for 2,877 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions last season in a disappointing rookie season for the Panthers. Not showing much improvement through two games this year after throwing for 245 yards, zero touchdowns, and three interceptions in Weeks 1 and 2. But Finebaum is putting his shortcomings on the shoulders of the franchise.

“I think it really is embarrassing and disgraceful for what they have done to him,” Finebaum said. “And quite frankly, I think if you brought Patrick Mahomes into this franchise, Tom Brady, or Peyton Manning as rookies, the Carolina Panthers would have screwed them up just as well as they did to poor Bryce Young.”

“I feel sorry for the young man.”

Young has not looked like the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner he was in college so far early in his NFL career, form he can hopefully return for the Panthers or elsewhere eventually when given a second chance.
