It was no secret that Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh was looking at NFL opportunities and had an interest in the Los Angeles Chargers. On Wednesday night, that interest became a pairing and Harbaugh became the Chargers’ next head coach.

On Thursday morning, during an appearance on Get Up, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum reacted to the move, comparing it to a movie script.

“Well, he’s going to the right place because even Steve Spielberg and Hollywood could not have come up with a more unbelievable script,” Finebaum said. “Here’s a guy who three years ago nearly gets fired at the University of Michigan. His contract gets cut in half. What does he do? He wins the national championship.”

Paul Finebaum also pointed out that this has been a long time coming for Jim Harbaugh. He has had interest in returning to the NFL for some time now, but when he missed out on opportunities he returned to Michigan and continued to compete.

“And don’t forget, two years ago he literally waits in the waiting room, eating sacks, while the Minnesota Vikings are about to call him in and they turn him down. It’s absolutely humiliating. He tucks his tail, goes back to Michigan, and what does he do? He makes three straight runs at the Playoff, he wins a national championship, and then he leaves behind a very complicated legacy, but a national championship.”

Jim Harbaugh leaves Michigan after compiling an 86-25 record during his time there. In the last three seasons, in particular, the Wolverines have found tons of success under Harbaugh, with three Big Ten titles, three trips to the College Football Playoff, and a 40-3 record that culminated in a national championship.

JJ McCarthy reacts to Jim Harbaugh leaving Michigan for NFL

Following Jim Harbaugh’s move from Michigan to the Los Angeles Chargers, his most recent quarterback, JJ McCarthy, took to social media to thank his coach for everything.

“THE Michigan Man! Love you 4, Thank you for everything,” McCarthy posted. “Your story isn’t finished just yet.”

McCarthy led the Wolverines’ offense to a national title during the 2023 season. Along with Harbaugh, he’ll also be moving on from Michigan, looking to make his own mark in the NFL as a player.
