Pedro Martinez reveals family members missing after nightclub roof collapse in Dominican Republic

Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez revealed in an Instagram video that several of his family members were inside the nightclub that collapsed in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday morning. Martinez said his family members are still missing in the rubble.
“Our hearts are with you, and we all are affected,” Martinez said. “I still have family members that are still in the rubble, and we don’t know what happened to them, but we just want to be strong like we have always been. We are a country that prays a lot and remains united all the time, so I just hope that everybody has the same courage.”
The roof at the Jet Set venue in Santo Domingo collapsed around 12:44 a.m. during singer Rubby Pérez‘s live performance, per The Mirror. At least 124 people have been killed, hundreds more injured as a result of the roof collapse, according to ESPN. It is not immediately clear what caused the roof to collapse.
Ex-MLB players Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco dead in roof collapse in Dominican Republic
Former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel and infielder Tony Blanco were among those killed in the incident, as well as Nelsy Cruz, sister of seven-time All-Star Nelson Cruz. Dotel was initially rescued alive but was declared dead upon arrival at a local hospital in the Dominican capital. He was 51.

Dotel pitched for 13 teams during his 15-year MLB career. He made 758 appearances (34 starts), going 59-50 with a 3.78 ERA. Dotel struck out 1,143 batters in 951 innings pitched. Dotel won a World Series in 2011 with the St. Louis Cardinals. Blanco logged 62 at-bats at the major league level with the Washington Nationals in 2005. He hit one home run and drove in seven runs. Blanco was 43.
Martinez, a native of Manoguayabo, a suburb of Santo Domingo, shared the following on X: “With a heavy heart I send condolences to all our family members and the people in the United States that have family in the Dominican Republic. We are sad and affected by the tragedy. Our hearts are with you. We are a country that prays a lot and remains united all the time.”
