The Las Vegas Raiders need a quarterback. Russell Wilson needs a home for 2025. Is a Raiders/Wilson pairing on the table?

Too soon to tell, says newly hired Raiders head coach Pete Carroll, he said earlier this week on “What the Football w Suzy Shuster & Amy Trask.”

“It’s so early and we’re just in the midst of trying to find the puzzle pieces, not even putting them together yet, so I can’t even say. Free agency hasn’t come yet,” Carroll said. “That’s the first competitive opportunity that will occur and then the Draft is coming, and we’ll have that opportunity to do things. I can’t tell you right now. I could guess but it would just be a guess.

“But I promise you, if you’re a real competitor, you’re not letting options get away from you. So, we’re gonna consider every option as a possibility and we’re going to go after it very aggressively with intent and hopefully a sense and a feeling that people want to be part of this thing.”

NFL insider: Russell Wilson is ‘name to watch’ for Las Vegas Raiders after hiring Pete Carroll

Top of the list for Carroll and co. is finding a quarterback for the 2025 season and yes, Wilson is an unrestricted free agent. Carroll and Wilson have quite the history together during their time together with the Seattle Seahawks and according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, Wilson is “one name I’ve heard to watch” for Las Vegas.

“They’ve mended fences, per source, and Wilson could be a stopgap while the Raiders develop a long-term answer,” Howe wrote on X last week.

Wilson, 36, was under center for the majority of Carroll’s 14-year tenure with the Seahawks. The two were a winning partnership, going 104-53-1 in 10 seasons together. Seattle won a Super Bowl in 2013 and appeared in another the following year.

Wilson, however, was traded to the Denver Broncos in a blockbuster deal during the 2022 offseason. The Athletic reported in February 2023 that Wilson requested the team fire Carroll and general manager John Schneider prior to the trade. Wilson later denied the report in a tweet, saying “I never wanted [Carroll or Schneider] fired.”

Whatever issues — if any — that existed between the two appear to now be water under the bridge, as Howe noted. And with Las Vegas owning the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, effectively taking them out of the Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward sweepstakes, it would make sense to go with a veteran such as Wilson who has familiarity with Carroll.

Wilson is coming off his first season with the Pittsburgh Steelers following his release from the Broncos. He finished his 13th season in the NFL throwing for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions on 63.7% passing.
