Philadelphia Eagles sign wide receiver DeVonta Smith to three-year, $75 million extension
The Philadelphia Eagles announced a major extension for former first-rounder DeVonta Smith on Monday. The former Alabama star will have his fifth-year option exercised on his rookie deal, then have his contract extended for three more years through 2028 while earning $75 million. His new contract includes $51 million guaranteed, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
Smith is coming off of a 2023 season in which he posted 81 catches and 1,066 receiving yards in 16 games played. It was his second season with 1,000 or more yards and also his second season with seven touchdowns. In 2022, he had 1,196 yards and seven touchdowns on 95 receptions, all of which were career highs.
The Eagles drafted Smith with the No. 10 overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Alabama. He was coming off of a Heisman Trophy-winning season for the Crimson Tide. He also won the Biletnikoff Award, the Maxwell Award, SEC Offensive Player of the Year, and the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award for the 2020 season at Alabama. Smith signed his rookie contract for four years and $20.1 million. It came with a fifth-year option for the Eagles, which they’ve accepted with a price tag of $15.5 million.
After the fifth-year option, Smith’s new contract will make him a top-five wide receiver in the league based on his per-year average. Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill is currently the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL, making $30 million a year.
