For his efforts, he received a Big-12 Honorable Mention selection — the second of his career. In three seasons at Oklahoma, Spikerman amassed 137 appearances and 129 starts. He collected 80 RBIs and took 90 walks, ultimately posting a .313 batting average.
While Spikerman was more than respectable from the batter’s box, he shined once he was on base. Spikerman boasts excellent speed and collected 50 stolen bases over his three years with the Sooners.
Spikerman likely would have found even more success at the collegiate level if injuries had not afflicted him. The 6-foot switch-hitter missed the first two months of his freshman season due to an injury. Then, disaster struck again when he broke his hamate bone in his right hand in mid-March of his sophomore campaign.

John Spikerman played high school baseball at Lake Creek High School (TX), where he was the No. 500 overall prospect and No. 277 shortstop in the 2021 recruiting cycle, according to Perfect Game. He was named the Montgomery County Offensive MVP in 2021 by the Lake Conroe Courier.
Due to Spikerman’s rare speed and solid bat, MLB experts believe Spikerman could find a role at the next level.
“Spikerman’s double-plus speed is the key to his game,” MLB.com wrote. “He makes a lot of ground-ball contact, using his quickness to beat out hits, and he’s a prolific and successful basestealer. He also covers plenty of ground in center field and leaves no doubt that he can remain there at the next level.
“In his first two seasons, the switch-hitting Spikerman struck out too much for a player trying to serve as a catalyst, but he has made more consistent contact this spring. He never has displayed much power, though some scouts think he has enough strength and bat speed to produce 10-12 homers per season if he opens up his approach. A shortstop in high school, he has at least average arm strength and could see some action as a middle infielder in a utility role as a pro.”
