The Pittsburgh Steelers released their depth chart for the final preseason game of the year, and Russell Wilson remains the starting quarterback. The depth chart shows Wilson as QB1 ahead of Justin Fields. The two have been battling for the starting role, and it looks like Wilson has the lead.

The third depth chart comes after the Steelers lost to the Buffalo Bills 9-3 in the second preseason game. Wilson and Fields struggled to get the offense going as both combined for 139 passing yards and zero touchdowns. However, Fields led all Steelers with 42 rushing yards, so his running ability could give him the edge in the competition.

ESPN NFL expert Dan Orlovsky said the Steelers should start Fields over Wilson. “Justin Fields should start for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Two preseason games in and two weeks until the season, I think it’s obvious that Justin brings more good than bad in comparison to Russ,” Orlovsky said. “The sacks, I would disagree that they’re all on the offensive line. Here’s my pushback and the tape is going to say you know Coach [Mike] Tomlin is going to say ‘That’s not how we operate.’ I think that’s the biggest issue right now. The Russ that we saw isn’t operating this offense. They’re certainly not contenders from the Russ that we saw this past week.”

Russell Wilson talks being the top QB on the Pittsburgh Steelers depth chart

Wilson joined the Steelers this year after spending the last two seasons with the Denver Broncos. He is known for his time with the Seattle Seahawks (2012-2021) where he was selected to the Pro Bowl nine times and won a Super Bowl. Wilson hopes to lead the Steelers to their seventh Super Bowl title.

“Our mission is to win it all, to win the Super Bowl,” Wilson said in July, per Steelers.com. “But we’ve got to do the work necessary. It doesn’t just happen overnight. That’s in our control.”

Wilson also discussed having what it takes to be the Steelers starting QB. “Internally, your expectations for yourself have to be higher than everyone else’s,” Wilson said. “I remember when I was a rookie, I was a third-round pick, the 75th pick overall. I was the third-string quarterback on the roster. I was determined I was going to take that job. That’s got to be the mentality every day. That’s the mentality every day.
