Matt Canada may be the least popular coach on Mike Tomlin’s staff. But we’re thinking a fan wasn’t trying to make an offensive statement when he asked the Steelers OC to autograph a toilet seat.

The signing occurred over the weekend at Steelers training camp in Latrobe, Pa. There was no one else at the fence when the fan asked the offensive coordinator for his John Hancock.

The social media account for SteelerNation shared a photo of the training camp scene. Autograph requests are as much a part of preseason camp as water breaks and air horns. The object was the key.

Matt Canada wasn’t only one who signed toilet seat

The signing quickly went viral because it appeared almost like a troll job on Matt Canada, everyone’s least favorite offensive coordinator. Actually, it was part of a challenge started by the guy who runs the SteelersU fan account on Instagram. The idea was to entice as many players and coaches to sign the weirdest items.

He posted another video showing Matt Canada wasn’t the only Steeler player or coach to sign the toilet seat.

The fan wrote: “You might’ve already saw the picture of me getting Matt Canada signing the toilet seat. It was made to look like an insult to him by other media outlets, but as you can see here it was just for a challenge. I don’t always like his coaching but I respect him as a person. Matt was very nice to me signing the strange item. Apologies to him, I should’ve been more careful and knew someone was going to take it out of context. I hope Matt has a great season this year, as always go Steelers!”

The Steelers are starting their second week of training camp in Latrobe. Today, the players will wear pads for the first time in training camp.

Meanwhile, Matt Canada still is on the hotseat, at least with Steelers fans. The offense is the issue.

Joe Starkey, a columnist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, answered a fan’s question about Canada, saying the OC can stay employed with a combo of wins and good stats.

“There are no excuses this year,” Starkey said of Matt Canada. “The Steelers have first-round picks and plenty of talent at the skill positions. They have thrown tons of money and a first-round pick into the offensive line. And quarterback Kenny Pickett got a full offseason to prepare. … It’s go time.”
