Steelers new WR Allen Robinson says Kenny Pickett is 'wise beyond his years'
Kenny Pickett was a surprise first-round pick, being selected by the hometown Pittsburgh Steelers. He began the 2022 season as the backup but eventually, replaced Mitch Trubisky as the starter. Results were mixed but any player going through their rookie season experiences difficulties.
Pittsburgh has now brought in a few weapons for Pickett heading into Year Two. One of those is veteran wide receiver Allen Robinson in free agency. You can go ahead and put Robinson down as a huge fan of Pickett despite not spending too much time together.
“For a second-year quarterback he is definitely wise beyond his years,” Robinson said. “How he leads the charge. His work ethic day in and day out. Very focused. He is definitely beyond his years.
“I was impressed when I got here. Watching somebody from the outside looking in, you definitely see the talent. Once you actually get in the facility and are able to be around Kenny, you see why he is successful.”
Success for Pickett was sporadic at times, not being able to string together multiple solid outings. Interceptions were a problem early but four out of the final five games saw Pickett throw for a touchdown.
The on-the-field aspect can always be developed but there is something he possesses you cannot truly teach.

It was obvious Pickett was going to do well from a mental aspect as an NFL starting quarterback. His days in college proved so, leading the Pittsburgh Panthers to an ACC championship as a veteran leader. Even as a rookie, that leadership has carried over to the NFL and not just for any franchise — one of the league’s proudest organizations.
“I have been here a little over a month and you can already tell his leadership, how he leads the charge day in and day out,” Robinson said. “For a second-year guy, that isn’t easy. For a guy to be able to take a bull by the horns like that, it’s pretty impressive.”
Robinson adds to an already impressive WR core Kenny Pickett has at his disposal. The Steelers traded for Chase Claypool during the season via Chicago and George Pickens emerged as a star during his own rookie season. Add a strong run game with Najee Harris and the offensive pieces are there.
The offseason will be for preparation, getting ready for 2023. Once the season begins, it’s about continually improving and eventually, getting the Steelers back into the playoffs under head coach Mike Tomlin.
