Pittsburgh Steelers re-sign DB Jalen Elliott
The Steelers added depth at safety Thursday, when the team reunited with Jalen Elliott, who spent time on Pittsburgh’s practice squad last season.
In fact, Elliott spent only three weeks away from the Steelers. He’d been on the roster up until last month. Pittsburgh waived him on July 17th to make room for linebacker Tyler Matakevich.
To clear roster space for Elliott this time around, the Steelers waived defensive back Nate Meadors with an injury designation.
Elliott is a four-year NFL veteran who hasn’t seem much action on the field. The Lions signed him in 2020 as an undrafted free agent from Notre Dame. He saw action in eight games, with one start, in Detroit the following year. He posted 12 tackles in those games.

The Patriots signed Elliott during 2022 training camp. He was released at the end of preseason. The Raiders then signed him. And in 2023, he ended up with the Steelers.
Meanwhile, the Steelers are getting ready for their first preseason game of the season. They’ll take on the Texans Friday night at Acrisure Stadium. Coach Mike Tomlin said Justin Fields will start at quarterback. A strained calf has slowed Russell Wilson, the expected starter for the regular season. Wilson injured his calf hours after he reported with the rest of the Steelers to Saint Vincent’s College in Latrobe, Pa. Wilson said he was pushing a blocking sled as part of a conditioning test when he tweaked his leg. He has started to take reps in the full-team practices.
