The Pittsburgh Steelers were able to secure one of their key offensive linemen to a new contract, bolstering their offense as they enter a new team era. Chukwuma Okorafor explored his options in free agency, but ultimately made the decision to come back to Pittsburgh as they prepare to build an offense around a new quarterback for the first time in nearly two decades.

Steelers re-sign lineman Chukwuma Okorafor to new contract

Steelers fans received some great news on Monday as one of their best offensive linemen was reportedly returning for another contract. Okorafor has a case for being the best offensive lineman on the field for Pittsburgh last year, and his expired rookie deal meant he would be entering unrestricted free agency this year.

“The Steelers are bringing back offensive tackle Chukwuma Okorafor,” stated NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. “Had interest elsewhere but returns to Pittsburgh, where he’s manned the right side the last two years.”

Okorafor was drafted out of Western Michigan by the Steelers in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, and has taken over the role of right tackle for the team over the last two seasons. Okorafor has started 33 games over the past two years, and has established himself as one of the best linemen on the team.

Although contract details were not immediately available, Okorafor’s free agency appeared to be slightly hampered by the names also available in free agency. Although his value is evident, the lack of need at his position seems to have allowed the Steelers to afford his new contract. The move helps secure their offensive line’s stability before this year’s draft, and Okorafor’s talent will be important for incoming quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

Mitch Trubisky’s statement on joining Pittsburgh

“I am beyond excited and blessed for the opportunity to be a part of the Pittsburgh Steelers Organization,” wrote Trubisky. “I have tremendous respect for the Rooney Family and Coach Tomlin. They have built one of the best rosters in football and I can’t wait to contribute and help this team continue their success.”

After spending the beginning of his career in Chicago and one season in Buffalo, Trubisky is prepared for the tough weather the AFC North brings. While Roethlisberger is a legend in Pittsburgh, it’s evident that his time was up during last season.

Now, Mitchell Trubisky is ready to take the mantle as the starting quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He understands the immense pressure playing for the franchise brings, and the former North Carolina star is welcoming it.
