Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren has suffered a hamstring injury and is expected to miss multiple weeks with the ailment.

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported the news on Sunday, noting Warren’s status for the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Sept. 8 is now in jeopardy.

Warren is coming off a second season in Pittsburgh in which he ran for 784 yards and four touchdowns, while also catching 61 passes for 370 yards. He’s a versatile threat, one the Steelers will miss while he’s out.

The hope in Pittsburgh had been that Jaylen Warren could shoulder an increased workload to help starter Najee Harris. Instead, Harris will have to pick up the slack.

There’s also the potential that Cordarelle Patterson could be more involved out of the backfield, a weapon for several years in a multi-faceted capacity now.

Already this preseason the Steelers have struggled offensively. They’ve scored just 15 points in two preseason games to date.

So the goal will be to get back Jaylen Warren as quickly as possible.

Cornerback Anthony Averett also leaves game

Like Jaylen Warren, cornerback Anthony Averett left the team’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday night with a hamstring injury. It’s unclear the severity, but he did not return to the game.

Averett came into the league in 2018, after he was a fourth-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft. He was picked by the Baltimore Ravens with the No. 118 overall selection. He signed his one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers on May 12th, 2024. He’s played in 51 career games so far. In total, Averett has racked up 114 tackles, three interceptions, and 23 pass deflections.

The Steelers had a number of other players with injury issues. Linebacker Payton Wilson had a concussion, forcing him to leave the game and not return. Slot corner Beanie Bishop did not play for the Steelers after getting banged up in the team’s joint practice with the Buffalo Bills.
