Pittsburgh Steelers sign free agent running back La'Mical Perine
The Pittsburgh Steelers announced the signing of free agent running back La’Mical Perine on Thursday during OTAs. Perine signed a one-year deal to join the Steelers, marking his fifth NFL team since the 2020 NFL Draft. The veteran running back has also been with the Jets, Eagles, Dolphins and, most recently, the Chiefs.
The former Florida Gators standout spent part of the 2022 season on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad. He then played in three games for the Chiefs in 2023, racking up 77 yards on 22 carries.
Perine was drafted by the Jets out of Gainesville in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, No. 120 overall. The former MVP of the Orange Bowl failed to make his presence known in New York though, and the Jets elected to cut ties with him after two seasons. He then spent time on the Eagles and Dolphins’ practice squads before landing with the Chiefs.
So far in his NFL career, Perine has amassed 340 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on 94 carries. Additionally, the former Florida star has added 14 receptions to his statistics, accumulating 96 total receiving yards.

More on the 2024 NFL offseason, free agency
The NFL 2024 calendar year began at 4 p.m. ET on March 13. At that time, contracts running through 2023 officially ran out, making those players free agents. Prior to the beginning of free agency, teams had a chance to designate one franchise or transition tag player, starting on Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. ET and ending on March 5. Beginning March 11 through March 13 teams could enter into a legal negotiation with players who will become unrestricted free agents.
In addition to NFL free agency, the new year also marked the beginning of all trades being made official by the league office. April 19 marked the deadline to sign restricted free agents to offer sheets. On April 24, the deadline for teams to match restricted free agent offers sheets hit. Following the restricted free agent deadline followed the 2024 NFL Draft, which ran from April 25-27.
