With the Steelers playing host to the Ravens this Sunday, all attention will be on the tender knee of Kenny Pickett. And whether the quarterback plays depends on how much he practices.

He said Wednesday afternoon that he plans on playing. However, it depends on how much he’s able to do in these next few days.

Pickett hurt his knee Sunday afternoon when he was sacked on a fourth-and-one play in the third quarter. Pickett didn’t return in an eventual 30-6 loss. An MRI offered good news in that Pickett suffered no significant ligament damage. The official diagnosis is a bone bruise.

“The more functional and more comfortable he is, the more work he’ll get,” coach Mike Tomlin said of his starting quarterback. “And then as we push forward towards the game, the quality of his work will be a determining factor on his availability. A quarterback is no different than any other position with young players. They need to inhale the perspective on preparation. He knows and understands that he’s prepared to practice.”

The Steelers already were tweaking their roster because of other injuries. Starting left tackle Dan Moore (knee) already is out for the Ravens. Tight end Pat Freiermuth is doubtful (hamstring). Both players suffered their respective injuries against the Texans. It remains to be seen whether the Steelers will get back receiver Diontae Johnson. He’s eligible to return from injured reserve this week.

Earlier Wednesday, the Steelers promoted tight end Rodney Williams from the practice squad to the active roster. The team also signed receiver Dez Fitzpatrick and tight end Noah Gindorff for the practice squad.

Ravens also have key injuries leading into Steelers game

Meanwhile, it’s uncertain whether the Ravens will have the services of receiver Odell Beckham Jr. He was a high-profile free-agent signee in the off season. He missed the last two games because of an ankle injury. However, last week, the Ravens upgraded his status to questionable.

Cornerback Marlon Humphrey (foot) also may be returning to action, Sunday, against the Steelers. “If it’s not this week, it will probably be next week,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh told reporters.

As practiced opened Wednesday, the Ravens received some good news. Humphrey, Beckham and Rashod Bateman all returned to workouts.

The Ravens also lost several players in Sunday’s win over the Browns. Those who left the game with injuries include right tackle Morgan Moses (shoulder), cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis (hamstring) and safety Daryl Worley (shoulder). None of them returned.
