Plane crashes, hits multiple vehicles during NHRA Finals at Pomona
Ahead of the NHRA Finals at Pomona, a plane crashed and collided with multiple vehicles. There are four injured passengers as a result. Flyovers are common in racing and today the worst happened.
The NHRA Finals at Pomona were set to get going early this afternoon. The L.A. County Fire Department was called out at 11:10 AM PST to respond to a single-engine plane crash.
The LACFD reports four passengers were hospitalized with moderate to severe injuries.
Jerry Jordan of Kickin’ The Tires captured videos of the aftermath. You can see a pickup truck with the cab crushed. Crews are working on cleaning up fluid in the parking lot.
This is an unfortunate turn of events. No one expects this to happen when they go to watch the races.
NHRA released a statement on the Pomona situation:
“We are investigating an apparent small plane crash near the dragstrip in Pomona while it was apparently attempting to land at nearby Brackett Field Airport on Sunday.
“Our thoughts are with everyone involved in the incident.”
By the sound of it, this was one of the small engine planes that performed the prerace flyover. Today is the final race day of the season. Champions are being crowned. But this is going to hang a bit of a cloud of the festivities today.
