Police officer in Tyreek Hill incident suspended six times during career, awarded for professionalism
Before the Miami Dolphins’ 20-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by the Miami-Dade Police Department. Multiple officers were involved in Hill’s detainment but the six-time All-Pro was particularly frustrated with officer Danny Torres’ actions.
On Friday, FOX Sports’ Andy Slater reported that in Torres’ 27-year career with the police department, he’s “had a total of six suspensions with some lasting up to 20 days.”
However, Slater also noted the Miami-Dade Police Department has “commended Torres many times throughout his career for safe driving and dedication to duty” and gave him an award in 2023 for professionalism.
On Sunday, Torres forcibly removed Hill from his car after he handed over his license and then rolled up his window, as shown on the body cam footage of the incident. Officers had threatened Hill to roll it back down or they would remove him from the car themselves. Hill told CNN on Monday that he rolled his window back up because he didn’t want to cause a scene.

After Torres removed Hill from the car, he handcuffed him while kneeling on his back. About a minute later, Torres once again forced Hill to the ground after he was instructed to sit down on the sidewalk.
Hill’s teammate, Calais Campbell arrived at the scene as he was in handcuffs. Torres approached him and told him to leave. After a brief back-and-forth exchange, Torres placed Campbell in handcuffs, as well.

Officers placed Campbell in detainment for “disobeying a direct order,” he said after the game. Jonnu Smith was also at the scene and was repeatedly told by police to get back in his car and drive away. Torres threatened to give him a ticket.
While investigating the incident, the Miami-Dade Police Department placed Torres on administrative leave. On Tuesday, Hill’s attorney, Julius Collins, released a statement on his client’s behalf “demanding” that the officer who was placed on administrative duties be “terminated effective immediately.”
“Each action that a law enforcement official take is governed by standard operating procedures,” the statement read, via Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN. “We are of the opinion that the officer’s use of force was excessive, escalating, and reckless. We are demanding that the officer be terminated effective immediately.”
On Wednesday, Tyreek Hill echoed his lawyer’s statement during a press conference.
“Gone. Gone. Gone. Gone. Gone. He’s gotta go, man,” Hill said. “In that instant right there, not only did he treat me bad, but he also treated my teammates with disrespect. He had some crazy words towards them and they didn’t even do nothing. Like, what did they do to you? They’re just walking on the sidewalk. He’s got to go, man.”
