Pro Football Doc weighs in on Saquon Barkley injury

Saquon Barkley worked tirelessly to return from a torn ACL suffered last season. Unfortunately, just as he was getting into a groove, the New York Giants star hurt his ankle in a freak injury against the Dallas Cowboys.
As the hopes of the Giants dwindled, Barkley’s generational abilities were stuck on the sideline. After witnessing the injury, Pro Football Doc David J. Chao diagnosed Barkley’s injury.
“Confirms significant lateral inversion ankle sprain. Swelling is common when the shoe is removed,” Chao tweeted after seeing a picture of Barkley’s ankle balloon. “First time ankle sprains cause more damage. Not as bad as high ankle sprain but difficult to return given at least a grade 2 (of 3) sprain which means tearing of lateral ligaments.”
After the game, Barkley was characterized as week-to-week. Additionally, it was added that the former Penn State star would work to only miss next week’s game. However, Chao isn’t convinced that that’s possible for the Giants running back.
“Good to have lofty goals,” stated Chao. “Even with X-rays negative, doubtful that Saquon can return until November.”
Unfortunately, the Giants suffered a litany of injuries in yesterday’s loss to the Cowboys. After Barkley left, quarterback Daniel Jones and wide receiver Kenny Golladay also left the game with injuries.

Barkley injured against Cowboys
The Giants watched Barkley suffer a frustrating injury in the first quarter that forced him to be carted off the field. Barkley appeared to injure his ankle on accidental contact, forcing him off the field before being carted off into the locker room.
After a long recovery process following an ACL tear against the Chicago Bears in just the second week of last season, Barkley returned to the Giants looking to make an immediate impact. The injury suffered against the Cowboys on Sunday is even more frustrating given his recent history.
After limping off the field, Barkley went to the sideline where he received medical attention. The severity of the injury forced medical staff to remove Barkley’s cleats, revealing the extent of his swelling to cameras.
Barkley was then carted off the field into the locker room for additional medical care. He was ruled out for the rest of the game against the Cowboys. While the extent of his injury is unknown, the Giants hope Saquon Barkley will not miss significant time.
