Before his Pro Day at Michigan on Friday, quarterback JJ McCarthy is exploring two options in the NFL’s NFC East division. According to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, McCarthy visited with the New York Giants, had dinner with execs and completed tours of the facilities last week. On Thursday, he’ll have dinner with Washington Commanders front office personnel in Ann Arbor.
The Commanders and Giants are two teams with picks in the top 10 of the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. While New York picks at No. 6 overall, Washington has the No. 2 overall pick. They’re heavily favored to take a quarterback with that selection and are exploring all the top options. McCarthy could also be an option for the New England Patriots who have the No. 3 selection.
The Commanders recently signed veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota out of free agency but they’re looking for a long-term solution after years of turnover at the position. Meanwhile, the Commanders inked former Missouri quarterback Drew Lock to backup starter Daniel Jones next season.
A two-year starter at Michigan, McCarthy led the Wolverines to a 28-1 record in 2022 and 2023. During that time, the Wolverines won the Big Ten twice and a national championship. During his three-year college career, McCarthy completed 67.6 percent of passes for 6,226 yards and 49 touchdowns to 11 interceptions.

Though McCarthy is visiting with the Giants and Commanders, the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos are the odds leaders to land the former Wolverines star. According to SI’s Albert Breer, the Vikings will have a private workout with the young quarterback next week after Pro Day.
