One of the most challenging races in sports is the 400-meter dash, an all-out sprint around the track. It tests the very mettle of an athlete, so the Olympic final is a sight to be hold. And American Quincy Hall put together the race of a lifetime on Wednesday.

His remarkable effort led to the gold medal.

Hall entered the final turn trailing three other competitors, but he turned it on and absolutely blazed the final 100 meters to take home first place. He did so in a time of 43.40 seconds, a personal best.

The rounding of the final turn made it seem like all hope was lost for Hall, as he faded a bit into the outside of the turn and had three others in front of him.

Led by Great Britain’s Matthew Hudson-Smith (43.44 seconds), Grenada’s Kirani James (43.87) and Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards (43.78) set the pace going into the final turn. Quincy Hall simply demolished it.

Using extra long strides to glide past his opponents, the American leaned forward at the finish line to secure his win.

Hall hails from Kansas City, Mo. but spent time running track for the University of South Carolina in college. He racked up quite a few accolades in the process. You can check them out below.
