Randy Moss, Alex Smith learn they're CFB Hall of Fame inductees on NFL Countdown

Randy Moss and Alex Smith each learned on ESPN‘s “NFL Countdown” Sunday that they are the latest inductees into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Moss, also a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2018, spent just two years at Marshall, though he was highly productive. Moss hauled in 174 receptions for 3,529 yards and 54 touchdowns in 28 games for the Thundering Herd. He took home the Fred Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s most outstanding receiver in 1997. He was also a finalist for the Heisman Trophy alongside Charles Woodson, Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf.

“No way! Let’s go!” Moss said on the ESPN broadcast. “Man, I appreciate that. Man, I want to send a shoutout out to first of all, my wife and my kids, but then to all my teammates at Marshall, my coach, Coach [Bob] Pruett, Marshall University, Go Herd, man. Stand up!”

Randy Moss, Alex Smith enjoyed successful NFL careers

The Minnesota Vikings selected Moss with the 21st overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft. In a career spanning 14 years, Moss hauled in 982 receptions for 15,292 yards and 156 touchdowns. Moss made six Pro Bowls and earned four All-Pro selections.

Smith shined in two seasons at Utah, going 21-1 as starter including an undefeated 12-0 campaign in 2004 and win over Pitt in the Fiesta Bowl. In 25 games, Smith threw for 5,203 yards, 47 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 66.3% passing. Smith was a first-team All-American in 2004 and was selected with the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. He is the first player from Utah to enter the College Football Hall of Fame.

Smith played 16 seasons in the NFL with the 49ers (2005-12), Kansas City Chiefs (2013-17) and Washington Commanders (2018-20). He went 99-67-1 as starter, making three Pro Bowls and winning the 2020 AP Comeback Player of the Year Award. Moss and Smith spent the 2012 season together in San Francisco, a season in which the 49ers made it to the Super Bowl.

The full 2024 class will be inducted during the National Football Foundation Annual Awards Dinner in Las Vegas on Dec. 10.
