Things took a scary turn once play was suspended due to lightning in the area on Saturday afternoon in the third round of the Travelers Championship. Three people were reportedly struck by lightning at TPC River Highlands, the location of the tournament in Cromwell, Connecticut. Both fans were reportedly conscious and transported to the hospital, according to a report from BreakingNowCT on Twitter. Golfweek also reported the news on Saturday evening.

David Dusek of Golfweek posted the official press release from Cromwell Fire Department, which included more details on the scary incident.

“On June 22nd, 2024, at approximately 16:26 hours, the Cromwell Police Department began receiving multiple 911 calls of a lightning strike in the area of 6 Pierson Green. Police, Fire, and EMS responded to the area within minutes. On arrival, first responders identified a tree struck by lightning and three patients near the strike. EMS crew treated two patients who were transported to area hospitals for further evaluation, and one patient who refused treatment. All remaining Police, Fire, and EMS units cleared the scene.

Respectfully,

Jason Brade

Fire Chief”

The third round of the Travelers Championship resumed at 6:20 PM EST, nearly three hours after the delay began at 3:30 PM EST. There was also a fairly extensive lightning delay on Friday afternoon as well, but golfers managed to get their rounds completed.

Tom Kim is currently in the lead at 18-under par. A win on Sunday would make it his fourth victory on the PGA Tour in just 63 starts. At the age of 22 years old and two days, it would make him the fifth youngest four-time winner in PGA Tour history, according to PGA Tour Communications.

Akshay Bhatia sits at 17-under and Scottie Scheffler is right there with him at 17-under. Scheffler fired 65-64-64 the first three days to put him just one back heading into Sunday’s final round. If he can pull it off and bring home the victory, it’d be his sixth win in the 2024 campaign.

Xander Schauffele sits at 16-under par, just two shots off the lead after three rounds. And Sungjae Im also joined him at 16-under, sitting in a tie for fourth place. Collin Morikawa sits at 15-under par, in sixth place. And Tony Finau has continued his recent run of excellent form. He sits at 14-under, in a three-way tie for seventh place with Justin Thomas and Shane Lowry.

Cameron Young shot a 59 on Saturday, just the 13th round below 60 ever recorded on the PGA Tour. It marked the first round of 59 shot on tour since 2020. Young is in the clubhouse with 13-under par for the tournament, sitting in a tie for tenth place after three rounds.

Ludvig Aberg of Sweden fired a 62 on Saturday to crack the Top 15. He currently sits at 12-under par for the tournament in a tie for 12th place.

The final round of the Travelers Championship will feature threesomes off one tee from 6:50 AM EST to 11:15 AM EST with an anticipated finish time of 4:00 PM EST. There is some more bad weather expected to roll in tomorrow afternoon, so we’ll see if they can get everything completed on time.
