Former San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk could be playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers this fall. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Juszczyk is meeting with the Steelers after the 49ers released him this week.

ESPN reported the 49ers informed Juszczyk on Monday night that they are releasing him. After the 49ers had their final game of the 2024 season in January, Kyle Juszczyk told ESPN that he plans to play next season.

“I know I’m not done,” Juszczyk said on Jan. 5. “I’m definitely not done playing. I’ve seen zero regression. I think especially, I mean, you can turn on the last two games and please show me where I’ve regressed, so I have no plans of stopping.”

The 49ers came close to releasing Juszczyk last year, but the 33-year-old fullback agreed to take a pay cut to stay on the team. He was due to count nearly $6.5 million on the 49ers’ 2025 salary cap and had void years on the deal through 2028 that would have cost an additional $1.6 million against the cap in 2026 after his contract was set to expire.

More on Kyle Juszczyk’s time with the 49ers

Juszczyk spent eight seasons with the 49ers and was named to the Pro Bowl every year. He was also named to the All-Pro First Team in 2023 and the All-Pro Second Team in 2024. During his time in San Francisco, Juszczyk rushed for 212 yards and five touchdowns. He also caught 184 passes for 1,895 yards and 13 scores.

If Juszczyk joins the Steelers, he will add competition to the backfield with Connor Heyward, who has been the team’s fullback/H-back since the 2022 season. Ultimately, the former Harvard fullback wants to win a championship before he retires.

“I want to win a ring,” Juszczyk said in January. “I want to win a ring here. But again, if I’m forced to do it somewhere else, I’ve still got so much football left in me. I still love the game so much. I’m still playing at a high level and I know there’s teams out there that can use me.”
