According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, arbitrators have ruled Marc Lore, Alex Rodriguez, and their group as the next majority owners of the Minnesota Timberwolves. They were going up against Glen Taylor, who also owns Minnesota WNBA and MLS franchises.

The process is not fully completed, though. Lore and Rodriguez must be approved by the NBA Board of Governors according to Charania.

“Just in: Arbitrators have ruled Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez over Glen Taylor as the next majority ownership group of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Lore and Rodriguez told ESPN,” Charania said via X. “The NBA’s Board of Governors now have to approve Lore and Rodriguez.”

Shortly after the news broke, Lore and Rodriguez released a statement on the matter via Charania.

“We are extremely pleased with today’s decision,” the statement said. “We look forward to working with the NBA to complete the approval process and close this transaction so that we can turn our attention to winning championships in Minnesota for our incredible fans and the Twin Cities community.”

Lore and Rodriguez agreed to purchase the Timberwolves from Taylor back in 2021, agreeing on the price of $1.5 billion. Taylor argued the final payment installment was missed back in March 2024 before saying the team was no longer for sale.

This case ruling in favor of Lore, Rodriguez, and the group now means pending approval from the board, they will now be the Timberwolves’ official governors.

Minnesota Timberwolves finding success in 2024-2025 season

As mentioned in the statement, all focus from Lore and Rodriguez is now on winning a championship. The Timberwolves have never done so in its history, failing to even make it to the NBA Finals. Last season did have a Western Conference Finals appearance but the Dallas Mavericks wound up advancing.

This season presents another opportunity. Not too far from the NBA All-Star Break, Minnesota sits in sixth place in the West with a record of 30-23. Things are tight in the middle, being just 3.5 games back of the Houston Rockets, current holders of the four-seed.

Anthony Edwards is the team’s current star and face of the franchise. Edwards is averaging 27.2 points per game while also snagging 5.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists a night. In a league full of young stars, Edwards is certainly near the top of the list. Everyone is hoping it soon translates to some team success, bringing a title to Minnesota.
