Report: Baltimore Ravens tried to sign Baker Mayfield
The contract stalemate between superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens only continues to get uglier by the minute this offseason. The closer and closer we get to the start of the 2023 season, the more likely it is the Ravens will need to find another legitimate option at quarterback, in case Jackson is not under center this fall. Per JoeBucsFan.com, the Ravens made an offer to former Oklahoma star Baker Mayfield, who is currently with the Tampa Bay Bucs. He declined the Ravens’ offer.
Baltimore currently only has one quarterback under contract, former Oregon star Anthony Brown. Tyler “Snoop” Huntley, is currently a restricted free agent, and hasn’t attracted much interest from any teams. It’s tough to tell whether or not Mayfield would have competed for the backup role with the Ravens or if Mayfield and Huntley would have battled to be the starting quarterback.
Regardless, there’s still plenty of time, but the Ravens will have to figure out another option in case the Jackson contract negotiations don’t work out. Mayfield is currently with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, after leaving the LA Rams this offseason. He had one of the more impressive comebacks of his NFL career this year, when the Rams faced off against the Las Vegas Raiders on Dec. 8th, 2022. The Rams trailed the Raiders 16-3 with 12:20 remaining in the game, when the former Oklahoma star threw some beautifully accurate throws to lead the Rams to a 17-16 comeback win.
On the game-winning touchdown drive, Mayfield led the Rams on an 8 play, 98-yard drive in just 1:35. With nine seconds remaining in the game, he connected with Van Jefferson on an absolute strike. Mayfield planted his foot at the 32-yard line, and he fired a beautifully accurate ball to Van Jefferson, who was blanketed by a Raiders defender at the goal line, for the touchdown.

He completed 22 of his 35 pass attempts for 230 yards, while tossing in one touchdown and no interceptions.
Despite the Ravens offering him a life-altering amount of money this offseason, $133 million for three years (all of it was fully guaranteed), Jackson was not pleased with the team’s offer and even demanded a trade as of March 2nd, per his Twitter page. Deion Sanders recently gave him some advice on Twitter, saying that he’ll basically always be misunderstood and judged. That’s just the reality of being a professional athlete. Maybe Mayfield turning down the offer from the Ravens means Jackson will eventually be under center in Baltimore. It’s really tough to tell what’s going to happen with Lamar Jackson at this point, especially with the NFL Draft right around the corner. It’ll certainly be interesting to see how it all plays out.
