Report: Brian Schottenheimer could be offered Dallas Cowboys head coaching job ‘soon’
Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer could become the next head coach of the team. Shan Shariff of 105.3 The Fan said an “offer could be coming soon for Brian Schottenheimer.”
The report from Shariff comes after the NFL Network reported on Tuesday morning that the Cowboys are expected to interview Schottenheimer for the head coaching role. Schottenheimer has spent the last two seasons as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator.
Dallas hired Schottenheimer in 2022 to be a coaching analyst. He moved to offensive coordinator in 2023, and the Cowboys finished fifth in total offense (371.6 yards per game) and first in scoring offense (29.9 points per game). This past season, Dallas didn’t have a lot of success on offense, finishing 17th in total offense (327.5) and 21st in scoring offense (20.6).
A big reason for the decline in offensive production is the loss of quarterback Dak Prescott. In the Week 9 game against the Atlanta Falcons, Prescott injured his right hamstring and was out for the rest of the season.
More on Brian Schottenheimer and the Cowboys
Schottenheimer has been an assistant coach/coordinator in the NFL and college football since 1997 but has never been a head coach. He began his coaching career in 1997 as an assistant with the St. Louis Rams and then joined the Kansas City Chiefs the following year.

The first time Schottenheimer became an offensive coordinator was in 2006 when he joined the New York Jets. He held that position for six seasons before joining the Georgia Bulldogs to be their offensive coordinator.
After one season at Georgia, Schottenheimer returned to the NFL and joined the Indianapolis Colts to be their quarterbacks coach. He held that role for two seasons before the Seattle Seahawks hired him to be their offensive coordinator in 2018. Schottenheimer joined the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 when Urban Meyer was hired to be the head coach and was the team’s passing game coordinator. He was let go after the 2021 season when the team hired Doug Pederson as their head coach.
The Cowboys are looking for their next head coach after the team and Mike McCarthy decided to part ways. McCarthy was the Cowboys head coach from 2020 to 2024 and led the franchise to three playoff appearances and two NFC East titles. However, the Cowboys only won one playoff game and never played in a conference title game.
