The Carolina Panthers have emerged as a player in the ongoing Deshaun Watson trade talks, according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson. The Panthers will compete with the long-time favorite Miami Dolphins, hoping to upgrade the quarterback position. Both teams were listed as suitors for Watson early this offseason. However, the Panthers faded in talks after committing to Sam Darnold, who has struggled in recent weeks.

Despite interest from the Dolphins, Panthers and several others, Deshaun Watson’s pending legal proceedings and ongoing battle with the Texans front office have put off negotiations. It now appears all sides are ready to talk with the Nov. 2 trade deadline approaching.

According to previous reports, Texans general manager Nick Caserio asked interested teams for three first-round draft picks and two second-round picks in a trade which could take place over the next week. Watson also has a no-trade clause, giving him final say.

In light of Watson’s offseason accusations of sexual assault, teams are looking for protection in potential trades. While is eligibility remains up for discussion, it appears some teams are willing to roll the dice.

Deshaun Watson remained on the Texans roster throughout the preseason and over the first six weeks of the regular reason but has not been active. Even after an injury to starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor, Houston opted for rookie quarterback Davis Mills over the disgruntled star.

Rapaport: Deshaun Watson could play in 2021

Deshaun Watson is not currently playing with the Texans, although he is still on the team’s roster. He has not been active and he continues working out and staying in shape on his own. The Texans maintain a high asking price for Watson, but if someone can come to terms, a deal could happen. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport also expects Watson to be eligible to play.

“His legal situation remains unsettled, of course the civil and criminal allegations of sexual misconduct. I’m told there are still teams interested in trading for him despite the fact this is still unsettled,” Rapoport said. “Watson also has a no trade clause, the belief is he will waive it for Miami. Unclear as of now what he would do for the others.”

He continued: “I have not heard that he is going to be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list. Even if someone trades for him, even if his legal situation is unsettled, barring some sort of unexpected development, I would expect him to be eligible to play.”
