The Seattle Seahawks recently released star linebacker Bobby Wagner, right after Seattle traded away star quarterback Russell Wilson. While Wilson might be dominating the headlines, Wagner’s entrance to the free agent market is big news. Now, the Dallas Cowboys have reportedly emerged as a possible landing spot for Wagner’s services.

ESPN’s Ed Werder tweeted on Friday that the Cowboys had interest in Wagner, who previously played under Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn in Seattle.

“Source: #Cowboys have contacted free-agent linebacker Bobby Wagner and expressed their interest in having him play for DC Dan Quinn, who coached him in Seattle,” Werder said. “Whether the financial components work out is yet to be determined. The two will keep in contact next few days.”

Adding Wagner would make sense for the Cowboys, as linebacker Leighton Vander Esch and Randy Gregory are set to hit the open market once free agency begins.

Wagner would bring a ton of experience to the Cowboys

Wagner first entered the league in 2012, when he was selected with the 47th overall pick in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Seahawks. Since entering the league, Wagner has continuously piled up impressive accolades.

In ten seasons with the Seahawks, Wagner totaled 1,383 tackles with 23.5 sacks and 68 tackles for loss, also adding 11 interceptions, nine fumble recoveries, and four defensive touchdowns.

Wagner is an eight-time Pro Bowler, a six-time All-Pro, and was named to the Hall of Fame’s All-2010s team. And Wagner’s value extends well beyond on the field of play.

“Bobby is one of the great Seahawks of all-time. His leadership in the community, locker room, and on the field is a tribute to his character and consistency. Bobby set an incredible example. We will continue to follow him all the way to the Hall of Fame,” Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said after the trade.

Free agency officially opens on March 16, and that is when a potential deal between Wagner and the Cowboys could become official. The legal tampering period begins on March 14.
