According to Newy Scruggs of NBC5 in Dallas, the Cowboys will be adding Will Grier to its practice squad as the team’s third quarterback. Grier has been with Dallas before, being with the organization during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. A reunion is now reportedly in store as a new quarterback is needed following Dak Prescott‘s season-ending injury.

“QB Will Grier is coming back to the #Cowboys,” Scruggs said via X. “He will be added to the practice squad this week.

Grier is a former third-round pick of the Carolina Panthers, staying with them for two seasons before making a move over to Dallas. Stops have also been made in New England and in Los Angeles with the Chargers. Stints on practice squads occurred in Cincinnati during the 2023 season and this year with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Going back to the 2019 season with Carolina, Grier played in and started two games. He threw for 228 yards, no touchdowns, and four interceptions while completing 53.8% of his throws. Both games resulted in losses for the Panthers as the offense scored a total of 16 points.

Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy announced Cooper Rush will be the team’s starting quarterback moving forward as the Cowboys prepare to face the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football. Trey Lance will be the backup, even after getting some snaps against Philadelphia. Prescott has yet to be placed on injured reserve but reportedly getting season-ending surgery.

Not the quarterback situation anybody imagined themselves having in Dallas when the season began as they dropped a fourth straight game on Sunday afternoon.

Just in case something else happens, another quarterback is needed on the practice squad. Grier fits the role and even has some experience working in the system. While the Cowboys are hoping there are no more injuries moving forward, a move needed to be made to add a piece.
