Former ESPN reporter Ed Werder suggested Colorado head coach Deion Sanders “would almost certainly accept” an offer from Jerry Jones to become the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

“Regarding Deion Sanders: I’m being told that he would almost certainly accept if Jerry Jones offers to make him the next Cowboys head coach,” Werder tweeted Thursday morning, “that those around him are encouraging him to pursue it and that Jones is enamored with the idea.”

Speculation surrounding Sanders and the Cowboys’ head coaching vacancy have hit a boiling point in recent days following news that Jones and Sanders have had preliminary discussions about the position in the days since parting ways with now-former Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy. FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported Monday that the two Cowboys icons have spoken and Sanders is considered a top candidate for the opening, with “mutual interest” between the two parties.

For his part, Sanders admitted being intrigued by the conversation with Jones, though doubled down on his desire to remain in Boulder.

“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Deion Sanders told ESPN on Monday night, via ESPN insider Adam Schefter. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”

Sanders, 57, has been linked with the Cowboys job given his longstanding ties to Dallas. Sanders played five seasons with the Cowboys (1995-99) and was one of the biggest stars on Dallas’ last Super Bowl-winning team in 1995.

Adam Schefter reveals where Deion Sanders stands in interview process

On Thursday morning’s Get Up, Schefter said there remains interest in one another between both Sanders and the Cowboys. That’s especially so with Jerry Jones having to do little research on him considering their familiarity with one another over the past three decades.

“Meanwhile, speaking of the Dallas Cowboys and what they do next, everybody focused in on Deion Sanders and the conversations that he’s had so far with Jerry Jones,” Schefter said. “Now, my understanding is no interview is set up, conversations will continue. Deion said to me he’s intrigued with the job and, clearly, Jerry Jones is intrigued too. Those two men know each other so well. They don’t have to have a lot of conversation.”

However, Dallas will also continue looking elsewhere as well with other candidates from the NFL.

“In the interim, Dallas is looking at other coaching candidates. They reached out to and will interview Robert Saleh, the former Jets head coach. They will interview the former Vikings head coach, Leslie Frazier.”
