Report: Derrick White signs four-year, $125.9 million extension with the Boston Celtics
Derrick White, a key piece for the NBA Champion in the Boston Celtics, will be back with the defending champs.
Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, White and the Celtics have agreed on a four-year extension worth $125.9 million. He added that the contract comes with a player option for the fourth year.
White just finished his seventh professional season and second with the Celtics. He started out with the San Antonio Spurs after being the No. 29 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.
In that time with Boston and San Antonio, White has averaged 12.3 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.5 rebounds.
White has developed into an incredible success story over the past dozen years
Without any major offers, he started his college career at the Division II level at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. After three seasons there, he transferred to Colorado where he spent two seasons as a redshirt and then a senior. In his lone season with the Buffaloes, he averaged 18.8 points, 4.4 assists, 4.1 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, and 1.2 steals. That made him an All Pac-12 performer and earned him the chance to become a first-round pick.
White continued his development in San Antonio before Boston traded for him in February of 2022. Since then, he has played a major role with the Celtics with numbers of 13.3 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.8 rebounds on 45.5% from the field and 38% from three. Those have made him a two-time All-Defensive Second Team Selection, someone who has earned All-Star consideration, and, as of last month, a part of the 2024 NBA Championship.
In the 2024 NBA Playoffs, White averaged 16.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists on 44.5% shooting overall and 39.9% from three. That helped the Celtics to a 16-3 record in the postseason, which brought their overall finish on the year to 80-21, and their 18th title, which is most all-time in the league.

Report: Boston Celtics owners will ‘make franchise available for sale’
Immediately following the Boston Celtics’ 2024 NBA Championship, the franchise’s ownership group is reportedly preparing to put the team on sale.
Here was that news, announced on Twitter on Monday afternoon by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski:
“BREAKING: The Boston Celtics majority ownership group — led by Wyc Grousbeck — is planning to make the franchise available for sale, sources tell ESPN. The investment group purchased the team in 2002. Massive development for one of sports’ most valuable properties.”
Over that span, the current ownership group has overseen two championships. They won one in 2008 and then the one this season.
