After a terrific start to his rookie season, former Texas A&M star and current Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane will have to miss the next four games while on injured reserve.

Achane suffered a knee injury in this past Sunday’s 31-16 win over the New York Giants, but the severity nor the specific type of injury was revealed. However, on Wednesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news that Achane’s knee injury is drastic enough to keep him on the sidelines for at least the next four games as he’s been placed on injured reserve.

Here was that tweet:

“Sources: Dolphins placing RB De’Von Achane on injured reserve due to his knee. Achane now will miss the Dolphins’ next four games — Carolina, at Philadelphia, New England, at Kansas City. With the team’s bye in Week 10, he will be eligible to next play Week 11 vs. the Raiders.”

Some really tough news for a rookie that was breaking out, and for a team and offense that was really hitting its stride with plenty of help from the young speedster.

The news wasn’t too surprising, though, as fellow ESPN NFL reporters Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero had noted that the first-year running back was looking at a sveral-week timeline for getting back on the field due to the knee injury. However, they provided the assurance that Achane will get back on the field at some point this season.

“Dolphins RB De’Von Achane is likely to miss multiple weeks with the knee injury he suffered in Sunday’s win over the Giants, sources tell me and (Ian Rappoport)” Pelissero wrote on Twitter. “It’s not season-ending, but the team is continuing to gather info and evaluate next steps.”

Obviously, that next step was deciding that Achane’s injury is a serious enough setback that it is worth placing him on the IR to open up an extra roster spot for the next four weeks. His absence is a major bummer, but at least Miami is now able to be more flexible with its roster now that he’s on the reserve.

Prior to going out with the injury, Achane ran for 151 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries in the win over New York. He surpassed the century mark in three straight games, and with 460 yards, is second in the NFL behind only Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers in rushing yards through five games (510). The 21-year-old has accomplished as much on just 38 carries, tied for 37th in the league.
