Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has been a head coaching candidate in recent NFL cycles. But now, as his one-year contract expires, Bieniemy’s future with the Chiefs is reportedly uncertain.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Bieniemy and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid will have a meeting in the near future to discuss Bieniemy’s future with the team. If Bieniemy does not return to Kansas City, there are a few possible options for him next season.

“There are no assurances that Bieniemy will return,” Schefter said. “He has considered coaching in college, listening to other offers or even taking off a year after a physically and mentally draining season in which the Chiefs fell one game short of the Super Bowl and Bieniemy was bypassed in the head-coach hiring cycle.”

Bieniemy played in the NFL from 1991-1998 with the San Diego Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Philadelphia Eagles. Following his playing career, he returned to Colorado, where he played college football, as the team’s running backs coach. he then held the same position at UCLA from 2003-2005 before taking the same role with the Minnesota Vikings in 2006. From 2011-2012, Bieniemy returned to Colorado as the team’s offensive coordinator.

The Chiefs hired Bieniemy as their running backs coach in 2013, and he held that position until 2017. In the 2018 season, Kansas City promoted Bieniemy to offensive coordinator, and he has been int hat role ever since. Despite being interviewed for multiple head coach openings, including the Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, and New Orleans Saints, Bieniemy has not gotten the shot at leading a team that many believe he is deserving of.

Bieniemy’s tenure as offensive coordinator began when Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes became the starter

Since taking over as the Chiefs offensive coordinator, Bieniemy has led one of the most dominant offenses in the NFL. Part of that success can be attributed to Chiefs starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but Bieniemy deserves a lot of credit as well.

Under Bieniemy, the Kansas City offense has been top six in the NFL in every season. This season, Kansas City started off slowly and struggled immensely at times. But ultimately, the Chiefs figured it out and again became a powerhouse in the NFL. Kansas City lost to the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game.

Bieniemy’s upcoming meeting with Andy Reid is a very important one, and it will have big impacts on the future of Kansas City’s offensive coaching staff, which has already lost quarterbacks coach Mike Kafka, who was hired as the New York Giants offensive coordinator.

“Bieniemy’s next meeting with Reid is likely to determine whether he will return or whether the Chiefs’ offensive coaching staff will need an overhaul,” Schefter said.
