Report: Former Florida State QB DJ Uiagalelei signs as UDFA with Los Angeles Chargers

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, former Florida State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has signed with the Los Angeles Chargers. Uiagalelei did not hear his name called during the 2025 NFL Draft and will head back out West as an undrafted free agent.

“Former Clemson, Oregon State and Florida State QB D.J. Uiagalelei is signing with the #Chargers, per source,” Pelissero said via X.

SI’s Albert Breer provided more insight on the signing, suggesting there might be a position switch in the mix. Uiagalelei has been a quarterback throughout his college career but struggled to produce at three different schools. Breer says moving to tight end is a possibility for Uiagalelei.

His size is potentially why the Chargers might be interested in making him a tight end. Uiagalelei was listed at 6-4, 252 pounds this past season at Florida State. For comparison, Will Disley was Los Angeles’ biggest tight end last season at 6-4, 265 pounds.

This is actually the second professional sports draft process Uiagalelei recently went too. He was selected in the 20th round of the 2023 MLB Draft at No. 610 overall. A Los Angeles team, the Dodgers, was involved as well.

Football still appears to be the path Uiagalelei is on, stemming back to his high school days. He will be an interesting player to follow throughout the offseason, seeing how the Chargers decide to use his talents.

This past season in Tallahassee did not fully go to plan, only appearing in five games. An injury sidelines him for the majority of the year but Uiagalelei threw for 1,065 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions while completing 53.8% of throws for the Seminoles.

Looking at his total career, Uiagalelei has 9,384 passing yards to his name alongside 61 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. Three years were spent at Clemson with Dabo Swinney before heading out West to play for Oregon State.

A coaching change in Corvallis put the quarterback on the open market once again, choosing to play for Florida State. Next time he wears a football jersey, it will be as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers.

Uiagalelei played high school football at Bellflower (CA) St. John Bosco, where he was a five-star prospect. He was the No. 12 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
