Jason Brown, a former college football coach who was featured in the Netflix series Last Chance U, is suing the streaming giant over the show. According to TMZ Sports, Brown has filed a $30 million lawsuit in Los Angeles County this week against Netflix and its Last Chance U producers. He claims they cost him a fortune by “portraying him in a false and offensive light through selective editing and misrepresentation.”

TMZ Sports said when Brown agreed to be part of the show in June 2017, the producers told him he would gain positive publicity from his appearance. Jason Brown said one producer told him “Colleges will be calling you after this airs.”

However, Brown said that Netflix painted him as a villain during his two seasons on the show. He claimed the producers “cut, pasted, edited, and distorted” footage “to depict him as a volatile, abusive tyrant for their financial gain.”

Back in February, Brown spoke to TMZ Sports and said he was considering suing Netflix. “I’ve never sued anybody in my life,” Brown said. “But at this point in life where I see someone getting taken advantage of like this, I won’t [join their lawsuit,] but I will get involved on my own side. And that’s something to stay tuned to because my legal team’s looking into it.”

Last Chance U debuted on Netflix in 2016, and Jason Brown was on the second and third seasons. At that time, Brown was the head coach of Independence Community College of Kansas, but he was forced to resign from his position in 2019 for insensitive remarks.

Last Chance U ran from 2016 to 2020. Along with showcasing Independence in the second and third seasons, the show focused on East Mississippi Community College in Seasons 1 and 2. In the final season, Last Chance U took a look at Laney College in Oakland, California. The success of the docuseries led to a spinoff, Last Chance U: Basketball which explored the East Los Angeles College basketball team.
