Report: Four NFL teams express interest in Matthew Stafford

Four NFL teams are interested in Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, who can speak to other clubs. According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders have shown interest in the Super Bowl champion quarterback. Breer also mentioned that “others” are interested in Stafford.
The Rams have Stafford under contract for the next two seasons. If the Rams were to trade him, they would take a $45.3 million cap charge. But if they release him with a post-June 1 designation, they will split the cap hit over two years.
After Stafford helped the Rams win the Super Bowl during the 2021 season, he signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension. He missed half of the 2022 season due to a spinal cord contusion. Stafford bounced back in 2023, throwing for 3,965 yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with a 92.5 passer rating. He was selected to his second Pro Bowl and finished eighth in MVP voting.
This past season, Stafford threw for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions with a 93.7 passer rating. He helped the Rams finish the regular season with a 10-7 record and an appearance in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Will Matthew Stafford play for the Rams in 2025?
Just because Stafford can speak to other NFL teams doesn’t mean he won’t be back with the Rams next season. “The people I’ve talked to with the Rams believe that they want to keep Matthew Stafford,” ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler said the past weekend. “They want to work out a new contract. … He’s due $27 million in cash this year. He is underpaid and is still one of the top five to seven quarterbacks in the league, so they have to work something out.
“But the belief league-wide is that the Rams will have a threshold and a limit as to how far they’ll go with that money. He’s in his late 30s, some durability questions, so they’re going to have to try to find a sweet spot. If they can’t, then teams are interested.”
Matthew Stafford just finished his 16th season in the NFL. If he plays for another team, it would have to be a Super Bowl contender, meaning the Steelers are the most likely option. Pittsburgh reached the playoffs this past season and quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are set to be free agents next month.
