Cornerback Rasul Douglas enjoyed a breakout season this past year for the Green Bay Packers. The former West Virginia defensive back has bounced around the league since being a third round pick in the NFL Draft, playing for the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers prior to joining the Packers.

Ahead of this past season, Douglas signed a one-year, $990,000 contract with the Packers. Now, he is set to become an unrestricted free agent. But the Packers reportedly are still having conversations with Douglas regarding a potential contract extension.

“The #Packers and CB Rasul Douglas are having ongoing conversations on a potential extension, per source,” Fowler tweeted. “Green Bay would like to keep Douglas after his big five-interception season. Other teams have high interest.”

Over the first four years of his career split between the Eagles and Panthers, Douglas had a total of five interceptions. This past season, he enjoyed a bit of a breakout in Green Bay. Douglas grabbed five interceptions this season, two of which were returned for touchdowns. He also had 57 tackles and one tackle for loss, in addition to a career-high 13 passes defended.

Locking up Douglas would be a big move for the Packers

Douglas is certainly going to be getting a raise on the open market. He enjoyed a great season in his first year with the Packers, and it won’t be cheap to lock him up. New broke on Monday that Green Bay wants to retain Douglas on an extension.

“The Green Bay Packers are expected to retain veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas in free agency, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly,” said Wilson. “Douglas and the Packers have mutual interest in extending their working relationship following an outstanding season, per sources.”

As Douglas enjoyed a strong season, his Packers teammates saw that success firsthand. Earlier in this past season, multiple Packers, including head coach Matt LaFleur and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, raved about Douglas.

“I love how he competes,” LaFleur said. “You see it in practice every day. He’s had two plays that have made major impacts on two wins.

“How was this guy on a practice squad,” Rodgers said. “The dude has made so many plays for us. He’s got great instincts, great ball skills.”
