Report: Jaguars expected to interview key Cowboys assistant tonight

Given the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offensive struggles during the 2021 season, it makes sense they would want an offensive mind to take over the reins following the firing of former head coach Urban Meyer.

According to multiple sources, including Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Jacksonville is set to interview current Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore for the job. Moore is well-known as one of the young, bright offensive minds in the NFL, and he started in Dallas as the quarterbacks coach in 2018 before a promotion to his current role the following year.

With one regular season game remaining before a postseason berth, Dallas has the best scoring offense in the nation (29.9 points per game). They are one of just two teams in the NFL putting up in excess of 400 yards of offense every time they take the field.

Moore played college football at Boise State and received a multiple all-WAC and all-MWC awards while leading the Broncos program. He went undrafted in 2012, and he spent six season in the NFL with the Detroit Lions and the Cowboys.

Jaguars plan to talk with O’Brien

Moore is not the only offensive coordinator currently on the schedule for the Jacksonville organization. The Jaguars are planning to talk to Alabama offensive coordinator and former head coach and general manager of the Houston Texans Bill O’Brien next week after the Tide play in the national championship game on Monday.

John Reid of the Florida Times-Union reported the news first, and Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network followed with confirmation.

The offensive-minded coach has previously said Alabama head coach Nick Saban was the only one to call him while he was out of a job, and he headed to Tuscaloosa for the 2021 season. Under his tutelage, quarterback Bryce Young became the first Alabama signal caller to ever win the Heisman Trophy. As a team, Alabama leads the SEC in scoring and total offense.

O’Brien was fired from Houston last season after starting 0-4 and amidst turmoil in the organization. He was the general manager in 2020 and the head coach from 2014-2020. Prior to Houston, O’Brien was the head coach at Penn State for two years. He comes from the coaching tree of New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, and his roots are in the Northeast. O’Brien is from Massachusetts and played college football at Brown.
