The Cleveland Cavaliers have just come to an agreement on a contract extension with one of their All-Star starters. On Wednesday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news that the Cavaliers and star center Jarrett Allen have agreed on a three-year $91 million extension. The former Texas Longhorns star is now set to make just over $130 million for the next five seasons.

“Cleveland Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen has agreed on a three-year, $91 million maximum extension that’ll now guarantee him $131 million over the next five years, his agent Derrick Powell tells ESPN,” said Wojnarowski.

The Cavaliers have spent this offseason dishing out funds to keep their elite young core under contract. Earlier in the summer, superstar combo guard Donovan Mitchell and fellow big Evan Mobley signed extensions to remain in Cleveland long-term.

Allen originally started his NBA career in New York City as a member of the Brooklyn Nets after they selected him with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. Allen found his way to Cleveland as a part of the massive four-team blockbuster trade that sent former NBA MVP James Harden to the Nets. Fast forward to today, and an argument could be made that the Cavaliers are one of the winners from that massive four-team trade, as they acquired Allen in the deal along with the eventual draft capital to help them trade for Mitchell. Couple that with the Nets failing to win an NBA championship, much less make it to an Eastern Conference finals, along with Harden now back on the West Coast as a Los Angeles Clipper, and you have a solid case and bright outlook for the Cleveland franchise.

Last season, Allen averaged a double-double for the Cavaliers with 15.6 points to go along with 10.5 rebounds while playing in 77 of 82 games. In the playoffs, in Cleveland’s first-round matchup against the Orlando Magic, the former Longhorn increased his productivity, averaging 170 points and 13.8 rebounds to go along with 1.3 steals and one block per contest. Unfortunately, Allen would only play in those four games after suffering a right rib contusion in Cleveland’s 112-89 game-four loss to Orlando.

After solidifying long-term deals for Allen, Mitchell, and Mobley while hanging on to several key contributors from last season, like fellow guard Darius Garland, the Cavaliers have an abundance of firepower worthy of being crowned Eastern Conference champs at the end of the 2024-25 season. Now, all that remains to be seen is whether or not the Cavaliers can remain healthy for a strong and deep playoff push next season.
