Jayson Tatum is reportedly going to receive the biggest deal in the history of the NBA.

Per Shams Charania, Tatum and the Celtics are closing in on a five-year, $314 million super-max extension. That will represent the largest contract ever in the association upon his signing of it.

Tatum has more than that dollar value following his seventh season with Boston. Over his professional career, he has averaged 23.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.1 steals. That has earned him five straight All-Star Selections. It has also given him four All-NBA honors with three of those being First Team designations.

Tatum’s time there also coincides with Celtic success. The franchise has never missed the playoffs with him. During those seven years, they’ve made five appearances in the Eastern Conference Finals and two in the NBA Finals. That obviously includes this past season where, with an 80-21 overall record, Boston won the 2024 NBA Championship, which gave them a league-leading 18th title all-time.

In this championship season, Tatum put up 26.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and a steal. Those statistics were then 25.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 6.3 assists over a 16-3 run during the 2024 NBA Playoffs, including their 4-1 series win in the finals over the Dallas Mavericks.

Tatum joined the organization after being the third overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. They selected him following a one-and-done year out of Duke where, after posting 16.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.1 blocks, he was an All-ACC and ACC All-Freshmen selection. That was also after coming out of Saint Louis, Missouri at Chaminade where he was a five-star prospect.

Tatum is the latest signing for Boston so far in the free-agency period. They signed Derrick White earlier today to a four-year, $125.9 million extension as another key piece to their title team. They also have re-signed Neemias Queta and Luke Kornet.

It has also been a busy day for the Celtics as a whole. Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the team’s ownership is planning to sell it after retaining it since 2002.

Tatum, along with the core with names like Jaylen Brown, have maintained the city’s winning ways, especially now that they’ve gotten over the hump with this championship. That’s why Tatum, the face of the franchise, received every cent that he did today to continue competing for one of the league’s most storied names.
