Report: JJ McCarthy will throw at 2024 NFL Combine
JJ McCarthy will throw at the 2024 NFL Combine, according to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report. He helped lead Michigan to its first national championship since 1997 this past season and will now look to show pro scouts he can continue that success at the next level.
McCarthy doesn’t project as the top quarterback prospect in a draft that also features Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels. Still, many draft experts believe he has the potential to land somewhere in the first round.
Perhaps he can even improve his stock depending on how well he throws at the NFL Combine.
McCarthy threw for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns, and four interceptions this past season while completing 72.3% of his passes. He also showed his ability as a runner with 202 yards rushing and three more scores on the ground.
The quarterback had a big-time performance in the Rose Bowl against Alabama to get the Wolverines to the title game. He finished 17-of-27 passing for 221 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-tying throw with 1:34 remaining to force overtime.
NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah listed McCarthy as the No. 8 overall pick to the Atlanta Falcons in his mock draft 2.0. If he is indeed taken in the first round, he will become the first Michigan quarterback to do so since Jim Harbaugh was taken No. 26 overall by the Chicago Bears in 1987.
“A lot of people around the NFL expect the Falcons to be aggressive when it comes to finding a quarterback in this year’s draft,” Jeremiah wrote. “They could trade up or, as they do in this case, stay at No. 8 and bet on McCarthy’s traits.”
The 2024 NFL Combine begins on Tuesday with team interviews and medical evaluations. On-field workouts start on Thursday, with McCarthy and the rest of the quarterbacks set to take the field at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Brady Quinn believes JJ McCarthy will be a top 10 pick
The quarterbacks could go six deep in the first round of the NFL Draft. And one of the fastest risers is former Michigan star J.J. McCarthy.
After all, the NFL loves its winners. McCarthy is intriguing because he led Michigan to a sparkling perfect record along with a Big Ten title and the national championship over Washington.
McCarthy could be the fourth quarterback off the NFL Draft board, but still go among the first 10 selections. Brady Quinn, the former Notre Dame star and a first-rounder in 2007, is predicting an elite spot for McCarthy.
“To me, he’s going to end up being a top 10 pick when it’s all said and done,” Quinn said on CBS HQ earlier this week. “I think teams are going to love his ability to create and his ability to take off and run, too.”
