Report: Kansas City Chiefs to place franchise tag on OL Trey Smith

The Kansas City Chiefs are making sure that offensive lineman Trey Smith is with the team for the 2025 season. According to FOX Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Chiefs are placing the franchise tag on Smith. Schultz added that the goal is to sign Smith to a long-term contract, and negotiations will continue.
The Chiefs selected Trey Smith in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and signed him to a four-year rookie contract. He was named the starting right guard during his first season and has helped the Chiefs reach three Super Bowls, winning two of them. Smith was named to the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) All-Rookie Team and was selected to his first Pro Bowl this past season.
In February 2024, Smith gained national attention for helping a young boy during the Super Bowl LVIII parade shooting in Kansas City. “Right before I run in there, there’s a little kid in front of me, so I just grabbed him and yanked him up and said, ‘You’re hopping in here with me, buddy,'” Smith said on Good Morning America (per NFL.com).

“This little boy was with his father. He was a little hysterical. He just panicked. He was scared. He doesn’t know what’s going on. I had the WWE belt the entire parade, and I was thinking, what can I do to help him out? I just handed him the belt and said, ‘Hey buddy, you’re the champion. No one is gonna hurt you. No one’s gonna hurt you, man. We got your back.'”

Smith added, “We just started talking about wrestling: ‘Who’s your favorite wrestler? What’s your favorite wrestling match?’ Little things like that to take his mind off it. He was looking out the window. He was seeing people reacting, trying to get out of the situation. I’m like, ‘Here you go, buddy, this is yours,. No one is gonna hurt you. You’re here with us. You’re going to be A-OK. You’re going to be all right.’ “
Trey Smith played college football at Tennessee, where he had a memorable career. During his time in Knoxville, Smith was selected to the All-SEC Second Team in 2017 and the All-SEC First Team in 2019 and 2020.
