Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has declined an interview request from the New England Patriots for their head coaching position, according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. Glenn is scheduled to interview for the other five head coaching vacancies over the next few days.

The reason Glenn denied the interview request from the Patriots is not clear. However, NFL insider Josina Anderson reported the Patriots were hoping to interview Glenn on Friday and were waiting to finalize a time slot. With the former NFL defensive back already having a full slate of interviews, he probably didn’t have a lot of time to talk to New England.

Aaron Glenn, 52, has been the Lions defensive coordinator since 2021. He’s a big reason the Lions have a 15-2 record and are the No. 1 seed in the NFC as his defense ranked seventh in the NFL in scoring defense (20.1 points allowed per game), tied for ninth in fumble recoveries (eight) and tied for fifth in interceptions (16) during the regular season.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell wants Aaron Glenn to be a head coach

Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently explained why Glenn should be an NFL head coach. “Aaron Glenn is — he’s as good a coach as you’re going to find, he’s an even better human being,” Campbell said, this week, per NFL.com. “Look, if nobody wants him, I’ll take him again. I can tell you that right now. The thought of going through another cycle and he’s not somebody’s head coach is ridiculous. I mean this guy is as good as they come, and he can do it all. He understands how to manage a game, he understands offense, defense, special teams, he knows how to communicate, he understands discipline of players and he’s motivating, he’s inspiring.”

Campbell added: “Anyway, I just — I don’t want to lose him, but I also root for the guy because I just think he’s a hell of a coach,” Campbell said. “But what he did the other day and what that defensive staff did and what our players did to have the plan in place of what we knew we needed to do and to watch them bring it to life, our players brought that plan to life and they did it and it speaks for itself.”

Glenn played in the NFL from 1994 to 2008. He spent the majority of his career with the New York Jets (1994-2001) but also spent time with the Houston Texans (2002-2004), Dallas Cowboys (2005-2006) Jacksonville Jaguars (2007) and New Orleans Saints (2008). In his career, Glenn recorded 41 interceptions and was named to the Pro Bowl three times.
