Report: MLB asks Yankees to ban fans who ripped ball from Mookie Betts during World Series Game 4

The viral moment of Tuesday’s Game 4 of the World Series came in the stands. Two Yankees fans interfered with Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts, even grabbing onto him in an attempt to steal the ball from his glove. Security immediately escorted them out of the stadium and now, they are reportedly not coming back for Game 5.

According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, MLB has asked the Yankees to ban the fans who were involved in the incident from Wednesday’s game. Thankfully for them, they will not just be eating the ticket as refunds will be given. Now, there appear to be two seats available down the right field line for a potential clinching game in the World Series.

“News: MLB has asked the Yankees to ban the two fans who interfered in Game 4 from tonight’s game,” Rogers said via X. “They will be refunded for their tickets, per a source.”

This was the second time a fan has interfered with a ball in the World Series, occurring in both Dodger Stadium and Yankee Stadium. Funny enough, New York second basemen Gleyber Torres was involved in both but with mixed results. Game 1’s incident was ruled a double but Torres was out following these two fan’s involvement.

“In every case of spectator interference with a batted or thrown ball, the ball shall be declared dead and the baserunners can be placed where the umpire determines they would have been without the interference,” the rule reads.

“When a spectator clearly prevents a fielder from catching a fly ball by reaching onto the field of play, the batter shall be ruled out. But no interference is called if a spectator comes in contact with a batted or thrown ball without reaching onto the field of play — even if a fielder might have caught the ball had the spectator not been there.”

Moving forward, the Dodgers are just one win away from bringing home another championship for the franchise. While those two fans will be hoping the Yankees can send the series back to Los Angeles, they will be watching from somewhere else.
