The New Orleans Saints are planning to interview Mike McCarthy for their head coaching vacancy. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Saints are expected to speak to McCarthy early next week.

McCarthy is looking for a new head coaching position after having the same role with the Dallas Cowboys from 2020 to 2024. During his time in Dallas, McCarthy posted a 49-35 record and won two NFC East titles. McCarthy’s contract with the Cowboys expired last week, and both parties could not agree on a new deal.

“Throughout Mike McCarthy’s tenure here, including the last several weeks, I have been very complimentary of the job he has done,” Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said in a statement. “That has applied to our record over that time period, our team unity and culture, Mike’s qualifications and track record of success, and on a personal level as a tremendous human being. I have great respect for Mike, and he has led the team through some very unique and challenging times during his tenure.”

“Prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction,” Jones added. “I thank Mike and wish him, his wife Jessica and their family the best. They have been a wonderful part of our community here.”

More on Mike McCarthy and the Saints

Mike McCarthy, 61, began his NFL head coaching career in 2006 when he became the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. He was there for 13 seasons and led the team to a Super Bowl win during the 2010 season. McCarthy also won six NFC North titles and led the Packers to four NFC Championship appearances.

The Saints are looking for a new head coach after firing Dennis Allen halfway through the season. Darren Rizzi took over as the interim head coach and led the Saints to a 3-5 record in their final eight games.

“We’ve got the best professional sports league in the world, and there’s 32 jobs, and a lot of guys want to be head coach, so every job is attractive,” Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said this week, per the team’s official website. “They just are, including ours.

“We have a lot of things to offer – a great city, great fan base, we have great ownership, we have had great stability in our building for a long, long time. And I think we’re viewed that way.”
